08.Junichi Sasai (Rabel’s Richthofen)

Born and rise in a military family, whose grand uncle was a lieutenant general, Takijirō Ōnishi, he didn’t fulfill his parents, even families’ expect, as he is really weak as he was young. After graduated from the Tokyo First high school, he joint the Navy school, taken part in the pilot training as he graduated as lieutenant. He was a well known combative man during the training program, so he was nicknamed Shamo chicken.

Tainan Navy Air Squadron
He later joint the Tainan Navy air squadron, taken part in the mission with his colleague, Hiroyoshi Nishizawa, Saburo Sakai, and Tetsuzō Iwamoto. He won his first confirm kill as he shot down a F2A fighter of the US. He shot down another enemy two weeks later. According to the record, he had a drawing of the famous samurai, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, in his room, which is his idol.

He and his squadron was transformed to Lae at 1942 April, where he proof himself as the ace and the leader. He became the commander a month later as they were transported to Lae. Though he was the superior, he wasn’t like others playing crucial to his man, actually they act more like friends. He was once discriminated as he lead his fighter squadron to intercept the incoming bomber instead of escort the bomber they sent to, and pissed off his superior, who punished him hardly.

At 1943 October, he and his squadron was transformed to Rabel. As the Japanese didn’t have a good way to dealt with tropical disease, all of his squadron was suffered from the disease. But this didn’t decrease his reputation. As he is so handsome, so skillful, just like Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, he was nicknamed the “Rabel’s Richthofen” and “Rabel Prince.”

However, ace might be shot down one day. As the disease among the pilot didn’t got control, he got a little disease, as well as a little fatigue. However, being a commander, he still lead his crew to escort the bomber. As he passed the enemy’s airbase, he found out that there was still a plane trying to take off. He dived and tried to shot it down, but the pilot in the plane that tried to took off already found his attempt, so they got into a dogfight, which Sasai was shot down and the aircraft totally tear apart in the sky. The guy shot him down was Marion Eugene Carl, an fighter ace in VMF223. After the incident, when Carl became a tutor, he always told his student to put an eye on their rear.

Japanese lost one of their greatest ace once again.

09.Last but not the least

As this is the last paragraph of this semester, I am going to share the thing I'd learned by the blog.

Lots of you might be curious why I choose this topic. Frankly speaking, I am curious too. The reason I wrote the Aces in the sky is that they are the admirable ones. They paid their life for a war that even shouldn't exist. Some of they volunteered for the war, while more of them didn't even want to be in the war. But they didn't , or can't ignore the truth that the country needs them. They took up their weapon, stand up for their country, fight for their honor. They are the true hero, no matter they lost their life on the battlefield.

After the "end of the all war," no war ends, but several countries, especially the allies, collapse. Take Germany as an example. The unreasonable war compensate took the whole country into the hell, that's when the German aces, Oswald Boelcke and Walter Krupinski, started to taken part in the Germany air force. Instead of facing unemployment and starve to death on the street, they joint for what they love -- sky. When Adlof Hitiler started ruling the country, they were sent to the front line of the war, the English Channel. As both of them where transferred to front line with Russia, they saw the WWII Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, Erich Alfred Hartmann, known as the Ace of the ace. At last, Nazi German lost the war, the died man will never relive any more.

As the "end of all war" ends, people imagine that a totally new world is approaching. They were optimistic to the future, they have lots of dreams. However, the Great Depression devastated everything. Japanese government was one of the victims, as most of the bank in Japan were all bankrupted in a night. Disastrous atmosphere gave no one hope. In order to save their dying country, they started to invade the country they took as "lazy and stupid," China.Though Hiroyoshi Nishizawa(にしざわ ひろよし), Junichi Sasai (Rabel’s Richthofen), Saburo Sakai (さかい さぶろう) and Tetsuzō Iwamoto (いわもと てつぞう) joint the navy for several reason, they were all witness of the rolling of the history. They were all once a member of Tainan Navy Air squadron, fighting for their country. Some of them survived after the war, while more didn't. They even started to kamikaze, trying to won the victory in a miserable way. They lost at last. No one gain from the war.

As the WWIII might be approaching, I am looking forward all of the human beings should think twice, even double price before they start any conflict that might expand to war. Human beings should be united, leading the whole civilization into another height, discover the universe, discover the unknown.

Here's some doomsday (apocalypse) picture for you

07.Hiroyoshi Nishizawa(にしざわ ひろよし)

My opinion:
planes:
Zero fighter is a great plane, it has a great turning ratio, easily to control, unbelievable range of attack, multiple function......etc. However, zero fighter was still tugged by the wrong policy in Japan -- they keep improve the platform, the zero fighter, as it was defeated by the US navy often as their plane isn't safety enough -- non of the zero fighter got a bullet proof shell even if it was designed to have, and their fuel tank are fragile -- it seldom took fighter pilot who was struck by the enemy back. It is quite a serious problem. The one, especially the aces, that has experience seldom teach the new beys how to deal with their enemy, how to fight with their weapon. It actually indirectly lead to the result that they started to kamikaze -- if I couldn't survive in high intensity war because I am lack of experience, why bother just train for kamikaze and try the best to destroy enemies ?
This pilot:
The reason why I interview this fighter is that he was a member of the Tainan Air Group (台南海軍航空隊). Instead of that, he was somehow willing to kamikaze. As the history passed, the reason that he is willing for that isn't able to know. But he is the weird one as most of the fighter cherish their life, he didn't. I am not with kamikaze, but in my opinion, he has a lonely and unsuccessful soul that tried to fight to the last minute of his life. Ironically, the man tried to dedicate his life to the battle didn't die on his plane as a pilot, those cherish their life were crawled in the sky.

Born in an alcohol shop, his characteristic was hate losing, which highly affect his life, lead him to become an Ace. He joint the Navy when he was 14, started his life in military. After trained, he was assigned to the 4th Navy Air Squadron, later been merged to the Tainan Air Group (台南海軍航空隊). According to his former colleague, Saburo Sakai, he was about 172 cm tall, 60 kg weigh, looks white, often plagued by malaria and cutaneous condition. As he is also great at Judo, they often called him the “devil.” Sakai even mentioned that “I have never seen who is so good at flying the Zero fighter.” He become a confirmed quickly after his is transported to the squadron after he shot down six fighters in three days.

He become famous as he once played tricked named as Danse Macabre. Once when they were spying radio, they found out that an Australia radio station is playing the song “Danse Macabre”, he and his colleague decided to do some air show on the top of Port Moresby AB. The night they got an English paper said that they will be welcome by the soldier next time when they do the same trick again.

After the war in Tainan, he and his squadron was transported to Rabel to fight with the US. As one of his friend – Sakai was heavily harmed, he took him to the hospital himself. But since the US Navy out number and out tactic them, one and another ace died, till they were all been taken back to Japan as tutor. At 1944, the squadron he was in, the 203 naval air force squadron was made to escort the first kamikaze mission, where he shot down two more enemies, which was the last to confirmed kill. He tried to volunteered for the kamikaze mission, but was rejected, as his plane, a Zero fighter type 52 with a 250 pound bomb, was taken out to taken part in the kamikaze, hit USS Suwannee on the deck with lots of torpedoes bomber, KIA(killed in action) 85 and made 58 MIA(miss in action), wounded 102.

After that, he and other pilot take Nakajima Ki-49 to handover his new plane, but was shot down on their way.

May the lonely soul rest in peace.

06.Saburo Sakai (さかい さぶろう)

Man said ”If you have determination and perseverance, ” it is the greatest phrase to describe Saburo Sakai. He started to dream to become a pilot since he was young, but as he didn’t pass the curricular test, he barely gave his dream up. But the Navy suddenly lack of pilots, so he joint the Navy to try to serve as a pilot when he was 16. He took part in the training program after he passed the strict Navy pilot test, even graduated honor, represent the whole class to receive the watch given by the Japan emperor.

He was sent to the China Japan war at first after a longer training. During the war, he shot down several bombers and fighters, then he was assigned to the Tainan Air Group (台南海軍航空隊), which is famous for taking down almost all of the American fighters at the beginning of war.
He took part in the WWII after the Japanese Navy struck the Pearl Harbor. He and his colleague took part in striking the Clark AB in Philippines, taking down lots of enemies. During that time, he was once serious ill and was sent back to Japan to heal his body for about three month. After his recovery, he and his squadron was transformed to New Guinea, taken part in the deadly Rabaul war, won most of his shot down credit here.

If you ask ”is he famous in the US?” the answer will be yes without hesitation. During the war, he was once flew to the US army’s air base as chasing the bombers, and they started to play tricks on the top of the airport instead of attacking the air base. Though he and his colleague burst their superior in to anger, they became really famous among both of the campaign.

“Even experts might be in trouble ” might be the best quote to describe how he was harmed in a dogfight. At first, the attacking procedure was very smooth, as they flew back to their air base, they found some hostile in front of them. Without checking whether it is bomber or fighter, Sakai engaged, and he was serious harmed, especially his right eye was stack by a shatter of the glass, which almost destroy his pilot career.

After the cure of his eyes, which didn’t became as good as it was, he was sent to Iwo Jima, taken part in the defend of the sky. He even almost taken part in kamikaze before it was formed as the commander tried to protect their reputation by doing it, but he failed and return to base. As the US wasn’t really interested in taking down Iwo Jima at that time, he was finally transport back to Japan as a tutor and new fighter test man.

Post war, he was in trouble at first, as he didn’t he retire payment and he was resigned by the US control Japan,     he formed his own printer factory to help those like him after he finally own a fortune. His wife even died. At 1955, he and the US journalist Martin Caidin cooperate the well known book, “Ôzora no Samurai, or Zero Pilot”, he became famous and provided a lot of precious data of the Tainan Air Group (台南海軍航空隊), visit the us several time and even regroup with the DC3 transporter crew that he disobeyed his superior to let it go instead of shot it down.

05. Tetsuzō Iwamoto (いわもと てつぞう)

As the pearl harbor incident broke out, Japanese Navy and air forces (which is under the formation of the Navy and Army)  did their best to fight for their nation. Battles slaughtered millions of people, especially the one flew in the sky. However, didn't have any advantage doesn't meant that they don't have any ace fighter. Tetsuzō Iwamoto, known as the "Zero fighter's tiger"(零戰虎徹) was one of the greatest example.

Born in a cop's family, Iwamoto didn't won victory on the university entrance test, so he joint the Navy. He was just a sailor at first, but as he was assigned to the Japanese air carrier, he made up his mind to become a pilot. By determination and perseverance,  he won himself a place in it, and was assigned to China to escort the bomber.

the plane A5M 九六式艦上戦闘機, which Iwamoto flew first

He engaged as the enemy fighter tried to attack the bomber, and shot down 4 enemies that day, shot down another for Soviet made plane the next day directly on the enemies' air base. Though he was scouted and warned by his superior at first, he won himself a metal by killing down 14 aircraft before he was transformed to the  Ryūjō (りゅうじょう ) aircraft carrier. At that moment, had trained to fly the famous Zero fighter 21 type (A6M2), which was his favorite one in service.
Zero fighter type 21
He taken part at the Pearl harbor action as the escort, and then service at the Indian sea. He taken part in the greatest air carrier battle: the Battle of the Coral Sea. He was the escort of the air carrier Zuikaku, fighting with tons of SBD Dauntless, F4F Wildcat and TBD Destroyer. The aircraft carrier he was on saved itself by driven into the storm, but it lost nearly half of it's pilot, which is a serious harm to the Jap Navy. Since he was so good at killing down enemy, he was then become the tutor of the newby fighter pilot which is still training.

After that, he was sent to taken part in the 201 air force, known as the Rabaul air force. Since he was such a super fighter pilot who even flew to the enemy's air base ambush solo, some of the grounds(地勤人員) often said that "the Rabaul's sky belongs to Iwamoto." He won his reputation there, and was well-known by both of the army.
Grounds gave Iwamoto flower before he take off

At these moment, lots of Jap aces lost their life, but Iwamoto wasn't one of them. Why? It's because not only is he a great and talanted fighter, he can sense enemy from a super far distance and fight just like Irich Hartmann-- hit and run tactic. Not only that, he was a great war manager, chose the most benefit way to fight, from the best angle, the best position.

After the Japs retreat from Rabaul, he was once sent to Taiwan, taken part in Formosa Air Battle and Philippines Campaign (1944–45) as the leader of the young fighter pilot. When the Yamamoto super battleship was preparing for the suicide mission, he even intercept a B29 solo. Though he trained the kamikaze pilot, he was against it, as he mentioned that those pilot were lack of training.

Though he died after the war because of the Sepsis caused by the surgery of Appendicitis, his wife sort out his diary and published his biography.

They said he is the man born for the Zero Fighter.

04.Walter Krupinski (The teacher of the greatest fighter)

If you mention an ace fighter in German that was 'grand talents mature slowly,' it will be Walter Krupinski without a doubt. Unlike his greatest student--Erich Hartmann, he entered the German air force before the war, joint the squadron created more than 30 ace fighters-- Jagdgeschwader 52, even under command of the ace fighter and the symbol of the squadron-- Rudolf Resch, he didn't shot down anything in the Battle of Britain, which almost all of the pilots had shot down at least one aircraft.

Why?

Because he was a terrible shooter, impressive terrible. Rumor said that once his superior told him if he doesn't shoot any RAF(Royal Air Force, Britain) down, he will be send to the transport squadron to fly the dump plane.

It was not until he changed how he fight on the sky that change his destiny. He started to ignore the rule of how to fight--shoot it at a range, snipe it as the red baron. He started to shoot at a super close range. according to his autobiography, he said that he will not pull the trigger until 'the enemy fill up my whole window,' which even the guy on the ground didn't shape his plane into good mode, he still got a kill.

Krupinski on the 2nd from the right

As he started to fight in his own way, he won lots of credits everyday. He shot down his first enemy from the sky as the whole unit transport to the Eastern front line as the Operation Barbarossa just started, and shot down 50 till the next year, which won him a metal. The day Erich Hartmann assigned to the squadron, something amazing happened. Hartmann wrote 'When I assigned to the squadron, the end of the sky came a BF109 smoking.(.......) The plane suddenly crashed, but surprisingly, the pilot walked out without harm. He is Walter Krupinski. '

He was then promoted as the squadron leader in 1943, and Erich Hartmann became his wingman, learned lots of skills of how to fight to destroy enemy without wasting bullet. As he achieved his 177 victory, he was transported to lots of squadron, protecting his beloved country, including taking part in the unit full of aces --Jagdverband 44, flying the newest jet fighter--Me262 on the sky of Berlin.

Remake Me262. Most of the Me262 were taken away by USA and USSR for research
Me262 engaging

As the way how Krupinski fight was too risky, he often put himself into great danger, wounded several times, some of which almost killed him. At the coming of the end of the war, he surrendered to the US, and was in prision for half of a year.

Instead of taking part in the war as an ace fighter, he was a former chief of  Fremde Heere Ost, know as the FHO, the Nazi German's intelligence at the Eastern front line gathering information about Soviet Union. He was recruited by the Gehlen Organization, former of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), the Federal Intelligence Service of the Germany, till 1953. The history of this is remain unknown.

Krupinski entered Bundeswehr post war. He climbed highly up rank, but was forced to retire as General lieutenant in 1976, as he and his friend had taken the autobiography given out by Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a businessman and a former Nazi flying ace in a veterans' reunion of the Aufklärungsgeschwader 51, which was the place once Krupinski had been. He was criticized as Hans was criticized as a Nazi by the ignorant reporters, trying to panic the public that the Nazi is back in the army again for political issues. He retired and died at 2000 in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid, Germany.
